Due to her father's work as a diplomat, the family regularly moved around the world and lived in various countries like Germany, Japan and Greece. Harden was a student at Surrattsville high school in Clinton, Maryland after she settled down. In the fall of 1980, she began attending the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in the field of theatre that year. Harden was accepted into NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988 to receive her MFA.
